Effect of Cr and W substitution on the packing fraction and electron density of Fe-B metallic glasses

Abstract

The Mössbauer isomer shift and the density are given for Fe86−xTxB14 and Fe80−xTxB20 (T = Cr or W) metallic glasses. It is claimed that the identical effect of Cr and W on the isomer shift indicates the lack of any volume effect at the iron sites, i.e. the introduction of a large impurity can change the local order without changing the size of the host atoms. The packing fraction is also the same for metallic glasses containing Cr and W.
