Abstract

The influence of copper was investigated in the range from 0 to 1. 6 wt. %. Cu affects the formation of GP zones in various ways; up to 60 degree C the rate at which they appear decreases, but it increases again at higher temperatures. With prolonged aging at room temperature the AlCu type are formed, as well as the AlZnMg type, at a copper content of 1. 6%. Increased strength is observed after a three-stage heat treatment in which the alloy is held at 100 degree C for some hours between the room-temperature aging and the final heat treatment.
