The antiinflammatory effect of aurothioglucose was studied in the inversed passive Arthus reaction, hypersensitivity of the delayed type and carrageenan edema. Judging by the results obtained with these 3 types of inflammation, a close interrelation seems to exist between the antiinflammatory effect of aurothioglucose and the pathogenetic importance of polymorphonuclear (PMN) leukocytes. In case of inversed passive Arthus reaction and carrageenan edema the gold compound produced a significant decrease in the inflammation; however, where the importance of PMN leukocytes was less marked, as in delayed hypersensitivity, the gold can only moderate the inflammation.
