Abstract

5 Hydroxytryptamine (20 μg) administered into the lateral ventricle inhibited the adrenal corticoid secretion increased by surgical stress. Crystalline 5 hydroxytryptamine (20 μg) implanted into the medial hypothalamus did not alter basal secretion, but prevented the increase of adrenal corticoid secretion following ether stress or cardiac puncture. The data suggest that the hypothalamic serotoninergic mechanism exerts an inhibitory action on the stress induced increase of hypothalamo pituitary adrenal function in the guinea pig.
