Early stages of nucleation and growth of Guinier-Preston zones in Al-Zn-Mg and Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloys

Abstract

The early stages of nucleation and growth of Guinier-Preston zones in Al-Zn-Mg and Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloys are investigated by in situ synchrotron X-ray small-angle scattering. The in situ synchrotron measurements enable to follow the decomposition kinetics from about 2 minutes after quenching. Based on the measurement of the radii of gyration and integrated intensities, three distinct kinetic regimes are observed and discussed.
