Duplex ultrasound as guidance modality for intravascular interventional procedures

Abstract

Duplex ultrasound (US) shows with exquisite detail the characteristics of vascular structures. Anatomic and physiologic data can be obtained from any desired location within the vascular system, including the extracranial carotid arteries, and from the level of the abdominal aorta to the calf. It is possible to localize the sites of occlusive disease precisely, to characterize lesion morphology, and to quantitate velocity changes that result from stenosis. This article describes the usefulness of duplex US in intravascular interventional procedures and gives an overview of its potential uses.
