Dissipative motion of an atom with transverse coherent driving in a cavity with many degenerate modes

Abstract

The cavity-induced cooling of the center-of-mass motion of a transversally coherently pumped atom moving along the axis of a high-Q multimode cavity was studied. The correlated dynamics of a coherently driven two-level atom strongly coupled to M nearly degenerate cavity modes showed many intriguing phenomena. Efficient cooling was found that can be realized especially in the good-cavity limit, where the dressed atom dynamics including Rabi oscillations became dominant.
