Direct experimental evidence proving the formation of surface layers in the course of the reduction of Cr(VI) species at a gold electrode

Abstract

It has been shown that the coupling of voltammetry and the EQCM technique furnishes firm evidence of the formation of a film on the gold electrode in the course of reduction of Cr(VI) species. The thickness of the film differs strongly for HClO4 and H2SO4 supporting electrolytes. Radiotracer sorption studies indicate a strong interaction of the film with sulfate species even in the presence of a great excess of HClO4 suggesting the assumption that anions present in the system take part in the formation of the film.
