Dimerization in KC60 and RbC60

Abstract

An orthorhombic phase of KC60 and RbC60 is found below 270 K in samples quenched through the fcc-to-polymer phase transition. X-ray diffraction, ESR, and dc conductivity measurements establish the formation of covalently bonded dimers in the solid state. The phase has an insulating diamagnetic ground state but becomes paramagnetic above 220 K.
