Dilepton production from pion-pion annihilation in a nuclear medium

Abstract

We have calculated the dilepton production rate from pion-pion annihilation in hot and dense nuclear matter. The effect of the strong pion-nucleon interaction on both the pion spectrum and its electromagnetic annihilation vertex has been included in the delta-hole model. We find that the previously predicted cancellation of these two effects for dileptons with zero three-momentum is substantially reduced when their momenta are finite. Including the finite width of delta removes the cancellation even for dileptons with zero three-momentum.
