Diclofenac-absorption from voltaren emulgel through iontophoresis and phonophoresis

Abstract

The authors report their experience with Voltaren emulgel treatment. combined with ionto or sonophoresis. As early as after the first application of Voltaren emulgel and ultrasonic treatment of the lumbar spine, diclofenac appears in serum. There is no cumulative effect, not even after 5 treatments. Diadynamic or galvanic currents cause higher drug levels in serum. Treatment of the knee joint with Voltaren emulgel and iontophoresis resulted in higher drug levels than with sonophoresis; diclofenac was found in the synovial membrane, as well as in the bone. Voltaren emulgel penetrates the skin well and has proven to be efficient both in the case of iontophoretic and phonophoretic treatments.
