Abstract

Butyl amine reacts with nitrite ion in alkaline media on the catalytic action of Fe(CN)5X3- (X= H2O, NH3) to give butyl alcohol and nitrogen gas. The kinetics of the reaction were investigated gas volumetrically. The kinetic rate law has been determined and a reasonable mechanism is suggested. The observed induction period is also interpreted.
