Abstract

Experiences of SVD serological examinations carried out during an 8 months period have been reported. Of the 2149 blood samples tested by micro-neutralization test carried out according to the method specified in the OIE Manual 1992, 63 samples gave a doubtful and 121 samples a positive reaction. The cause of these reactions are partly the titre differences found in the individual series of tests and partly the so-called "single reactor" animals in case of SVD free stocks. Exact exclusion of SVD infection required the examination of new samples causing a significant loss of time. Specific background of the reaction was excluded by testing of paired serum at the beginning, later on an ELISA method was used including also a so-called "limit serum". During the use of these methods - except for two non-specific positive pigs - all the samples proved to be negative. In case of the two positive samples the SVD infection was excluded by testing faecal and new blood samples, as well as by the serological examination of 5 other pigs in the same group.
