Diagnosis and treatment of Bell's palsy

Abstract

The principles worked out in connection with Bell's palsy in the Otorhinolaryngological Department of the University Medical School, Szeged, are summarized by the author. Partly on the basis of the data of the literature, partly on his own experiences, a schema, facilitating the prediction of the prognosis, has been worked out. As it may be concluded from the electro-diagnostical examinations, the course of the disease is decided within the first two weeks. Therefore the patients must be admitted as soon as possible to an institute where the adequate diagnostical methods for the expectable course of the palsy are available and also where the conditions for a surgical intervention are possible. The treatment must always be adjusted to the pathophysiological processes. These latter may be followed by the above-mentioned methods.
