Abstract

The aim of this study was to determine the digestive transit time of ferrets and cats. During the experiment the animals' diet was a mixture of veal and dry cat's food containing 1% Cr2O3, as a marker. Subsequently, the exact times of the defecations were recorded, and the quantity of the chromium in the collected faeces was determined. According to the results, the average first appearance time in case of ferrets was 4-8 hours, while in cats the rate of food passage was 24-37 hours. Thus, the transit time of cats is 4-5 times longer than that of the ferrets, which must be considered when the frequency of the feeding and the fasting time before surgery are calculated, as well as at calculation of doses of oral medications.
