Abstract

The FAO proposed a unified method for the determination of the vegetation period of maize. According to this proposal, new hybrids arc compared to known hybrids (standards), and the determination of the FAO number is based on this comparison. The determination of FAO numbers, based on the grain moisture of the maize at harvest and two vegetation period standards, has become inaccurate in the low grain moisture range due to the very slight differences between the hybrids. The new method proposed for the determination of FAO numbers improves the accuracy as it is based on grain moisture values measured on three occasions and on the date of silking and uses 4-5 standards in each experiment. It also leads to a reduction in the effect of the year and the experimental error.
