A rapid thin layer centrifuge method has been applied to measure the osmotic pressure, Π, versus volume fraction, φ, for monodisperse polystyrene latices. From the schlieren function of the dispersion in sedimentation equilibrium, the Π(φ) function, and thus the phase transition pressure and the volume fraction at freezing and melting points, and the coagulation pressure and volume fraction can be determined. The experimental conditions in the centrifuge method are the same as in the case of an infinite reservoir, i.e. the compression of the latex takes place at constant chemical potential of the dispersion phase.
