With the aid of immunochemical methods the alpha2 glycoprotein (protein of the 'pregnancy zone', PZ) associated with pregnancy can be demonstrated quantitatively in the cervical secretion if the serum concentration does not exceed a PZ threshold value of 10 mg/100 ml. PZ may be identical with the 'cervix-specific' alpha2 glycoprotein. The PZ content should be taken into consideration in hormonal contraception, sterility, local immunity and the origination of carcinoma of the cervix.
