Abstract

Diagnostical investigation of pigeons in the Central Veterinary Institute revealed in four cases virus-induced damage to lymphoid tissue and immunosuppression during a short (6 month) period. By histological studies, lymphocytic depletion and necrosis with cyst formation in the bursa of Fabricius (Figure 1) were detected in all subjects, that showed thymus and bursa atrophy and necropsy. Basophilic globular inclusions were found in the cytoplasm of medullar and cortical bursal follicular cells and bursal epithelial cells. Ultrastructural examination of the inclusions (Figure 2) revealed paracristalline or multilayered arrays or randomly arranged complexes of isometric circovirus-like particles about 13-18 nm in diameter. The circoviruses were detected by PCR method too.
