Abstract

Fifteen kinds of polycyclic hydrocarbons, the deposition rate of atmospheric dust contamination, and polycyclic hydrocarbon content of deposited and mobile dust were investigated. On dry days lower deposition rates were obtained than on wet days. The deposition rate of total dust particles and of total polycyclic hydrocarbons (km/day) was respectively 0.60 and 0.40 on dry days and 1.47 and 0.09 on wet days. On dry days the average stay of total dust content in the atmosphere was 1 day, and that of the polycyclic hydrocarbons was 15 days. On wet days the respective figures were about half of these values. Taking the average strength of the wind in Budapest into consideration, the total dust contamination may extend in dry weather as far as 173 km, while polycyclic hydrocarbons, although greatly diluted, may reach as far as 2,500 km from the contaminating source. Contamination extends on wet days to relatively shorter distances. The average content of polycyclic hydrocarbons in deposited dust was 0.1% and in mobile dust 1.6%. Since polycyclic hydrocarbons might spread great distances from the contaminating source, it is important to restrict the emission of these sources.
