Abstract

The determination of small quantities of pesticides solved in water by means of chemical analysis yields absolute values only. In this article a more sensitive, physiological method is discussed, which is based on the activities of the compressor of mussel larvas. Tests were carried out to establish the threshold values of the harmless concentration of 2 organic phosphate esters (Nexion 40 EC and Cythion) and one pesticide of the carbamate type (Baygon 20 EC). These mussel larva tests proved to be even more sensitive than standardized biological guppy and water flea tests, which are also discussed as a basis of comparison.
