Cytological effects of crude extracts of 63 higher plants and of 7 fungi were examined in cultures of chick embryonic heart fibroblasts, sarcoma 180 of the mouse, and the HeLa cell strain. Of the plants tested, 21 produced characteristic mitotic disturbances of different type, including stathmokinetic effects; 12 showed strong, and 21 median or weak cytotoxic-cytocidal effects. In the opinion of the authors, the in vitro method described here is useful for the selection of potential antitumor substances of plant origin for animal experimentation as well as for detecting the active principle during chemical isolation.
