CSF contacting neuronal structures of the third ventricle of opossum, hedgehog and cat

Abstract

Supraependymal neuronal perikarya, dendrites and axons were found in the mammillary and infundibular recesses of the opossum, hedgehog and cat with scanning (SEM) and transmission (TEM) electron microscopy. Axons form synapses with the ependyma, and with intraventricular neurons and dendrites. Further, free supraependymal glial cells and macrophages were observed. There are intraependymal neurons in the wavy paraventricular ependyma, especially in the opossum. In the hedgehog, some of the infundibular intraependymal nerve cells contact the CSF directly. The sub- and intraependymal cells may correspond to the hypothalamic CSF contacting neurons of submammalian species.
