Abstract

Although cryopreserved boar semen has been available since 1975, the use of frozen-thawed sperm in artificial insemination technologies represents only around 1% of total inseminations, mainly due to the poor reproductive output compared to chilled-fresh semen. The authors give a review of the reasons of this limited use and the major aspects of the recent artificial insemination technologies (number of spermatozoa/dose, different forms of packaging, proper time of insemination, different forms of semen deposition, hormonal treatments etc.) and their effects on the reproductive performances of the sows tested in field conditions. It is also concluded that with the combination of different approaches, acceptable fertility with cryopreserved boar semen can be achieved, facilitating the use of cryopreserved boar semen in routine breeding programs.
