Critical stresses of steel plate elements on elastic foundation subjected to compression

Abstract

A new direction of development in the field of light-gauge building systems is when the load bearing elements made of cold-formed steel sections are encased in an ultra-lightweight material. These structural systems can be used beneficially in the case of residential buildings. To be able to derive design formulae for these structures closed-form solutions are needed for the different buckling modes of cross-sections. In this paper the calculation of critical buckling stresses of plate elements having three or four simply supported edges resting on elastic foundation, representing the bracing material is presented.
