Coupled-chain approximation for driven lattice-gas models

Abstract

A coupled-chain approximation is presented for lattice-gas models driven by an external electric field. The method is used to study a square lattice gas exhibiting anisotropic ground states consisting of alternately occupied and empty rows or columns. This approximation suggests a small decrease in Tc when increasing the electric field and the continuous phase transition becomes first order.
