Abstract

The thermodynamic basis of chemical equilibrium is summarised. The relations of chemical and electrochemical equilibriums are discussed. The role and importance of potential-pH (Pourbaix) diagrams both for the interpretation of corrosion processes and for planning corrosion protection are analysed. Presenting the thermodynamic characteristics of carbon dioxide-ferrocyanide-, and iron sulphide formation we have demonstrated that in those cases when the corrosion potential is -0.85 V the cathodic polarization is not sufficient to achieve thermodynamic immunity.
