Adrenalectomized rats after 23 hr water deprivation were tested for passive avoidance learning. Drinking attempts were associated with painful stimuli given through an electrified grid-floor during a 15 min observation period. On the next day the latency of the first exposure attempt was measured and the rats were sacrificed 10 min after emposure to the testing situation. The plasma ACTH level measured by radioimmunoassay showed a significant positive correlation between retention of the passive avoidence response and the rise of the plasma ACTH level.
