Abstract

Field and laboratory investigations were performed at Bábolna National Arabian Stud Farm on the measurements of immunoglobulin G (IgG) concentrations of the Colostrums of 61 Shagya and Arabian Thoroughbred mares, and of the blood/serum samples of their newborn foals in the breeding season of 2007-2008. Samples were taken after birth from the colostrum and the blood/serum of the foals to check the specific IgGconcentration at stable-side with practical semiquantitative quick-tests and with a more precise automated method. In the first year only the Midland quick tests were used. According to previous data, IgG content of the colostrum samples proved to be adequate (40/43), just like the IgG level in the foals 8-12 hours after birth. Evaluation of the second foal blood samples 24 hours after birth gave the optimal results in all newborn foals (43/43). In the following year, both quick test and automatic turbidimetric immunoassay measurement were performed to analyze the IgG levels in the same samples {Table 2). The semiquantitative quick test yielded results different from the instrumentally obtained quantitative data in only three cases (1 colostrum, 2 blood samples). It can be postulated, that semiquantitative stable-side quick tests and highly sophisticated laboratory methods provide data of high accordance on the status of the specific immune defence of the foals in this stud which probably provides appropriate protection against farm-specific pathogens during their first months of life.
