Complex nonlinear behavior in optically excited nematic liquid crystals

Abstract

The passage of a slightly oblique incidence plane wave through a homeotropically aligned nematic liquid crystal (LC) with the direction of polarization normal to the plane of incidence was theoretically studied. Several equations were derived to describe the time-dependent director reorientation. At various intensities and angles of incidence, the director showed complex nonlinear behavior.
