In the first part of the paper the following new function was suggested: W = tb·eat+c where W = dependent variable (weight or leaf area) t = independent variable (time) a, b, c = parameters of function. After logarithmic transformation the function can be fitted by linear regression, where the independent variables are t and Int. In the second part the properties of this new function and three others were compared. We tested whether the trends of growth characteristics in two samples which came from the same population were identical or not. It was found that the trends of the curves were identical only if the new function was used. Therefore, the use of the new function is proposed if a joint description of increase and decrease is required.
