Comment on 'identation size effect: reality or artefact?'

Abstract

Through scanning confocal microscopy (SCM) surface morphology measurements on titanium and aluminium alloys, Iost and Bigot verified that the identation size effect (ISE) can be eliminated. To comment on this result, AFM measurements on Vickers patterns are carried out in a silicon nitride ceramic sample. The width of the Vickers pattern in the X-X' direction is measured by optical microscopy. Basing from the observations, it is opined that the Vickers print contains the bulging areas in the silicon nitride ceramic sample.
