Coherent population transfer in Rb atoms by frequency-chirped laser pulses

Abstract

Population transfer in 85Rb atoms in the field of a sequence of frequency-chirped laser pulses was analyzed. The population dynamics of the hyperfine levels of the 85Rb atom model was calculated using the numerical simulation and dressed-states analysis. Different regimes of interaction, including relatively long laser pulses and relatively short ones, were also analyzed. The interaction of a frequency-chirped laser pulse with the multilevel 85Rb system was similar to the interaction with an effective two-level atom at large peak intensities of the pulses in all the regimes.
