CODEX: A CODING EXPERT FOR PROGRAMMABLE LOGIC CONTROLLERS.

Abstract

This paper discusses, from a pragmatic point of view, the application of certain AI techniques in solving problems and their implementation as a working system. The main task of this system (CODEX) is the following: having sufficient information on the capabilities of any specific controller and on the given control problem, it has to generate an executable target program. However, at present CODEX's problem domain is limited to the programming of some relatively simple devices, that is of the so-called programmable logic controllers (PLCs). Large controllers being similar rather to microcomputer systems are out of the scope of CODEX's activities.
