Circoviruses of Fish

Abstract

This chapter summarizes the current knowledge about fish circoviruses. It provides a brief overview about the family Circoviridae and the position of the few known fish circoviruses within the family. A detailed genetic comparison of the fish viruses and other members of Circoviridae is in order to understand how they may affect the immune system of the hosts. Information about the pathogenicity of fish circoviruses is minimal therefore the possible role of these viruses in diseases is discussed based on reported cases and also according to analogies with circoviral diseases of birds and swine. The chapter ends by describing diagnostic methods that can be used for fish circovirus detection.
