The invention of Ti:sapphire and its development to a top-quality laser crystal, together with the appearance of novel techniques for laser modelocking and dispersion compensation, have revolutionized ultrafast laser technology. Now chirped dielectric mirrors offer the potential of even shorter pulses and may make turnkey ultrafast Ti:sapphire system a reality.
