New horizons open in pharmaceutical research if biological events in the human body can be monitored in real time, at the molecular and submolecular level. Such monitoring, the in vivo chemical analysis and structural elucidation is a fast-growing field nowadays. This paper surveys the progress of methods, that allowed the analytical and structural insight into biological systems, and also, introduces the physical bases and assesses the capabilities of the most recent and promising techniques, such as microdialysis, microprobe analysis, and magnetic resonance techniques.
