Changes of OH- bands induced by laser irradiation in LiNbO3: Fe single crystals

By FTIR spectroscopy in undoped and Fe-doped LiNbO3 single crystals of same origin and different histories it was found that laser irradiations in Fe-doped crystals cause the appearance of an OH- band at ˜3507 cm-1. This band is assumed to be caused by the formation of Fe2+(Li)-OH--Fe3+(Nb) complexes via proton migration. This process precedes the microscopic structural laser-damages studied earlier.
