Changes in phycocyanin-carotenoid association during nitrate starvation of Anacystis nidulans

Abstract

Phycocyanin degradation during nitrate starvation of the cyanobacterium Anacystis nidulans was found to be correlated with the decay of resonance Raman spectra of membrane-bound carotenoids. The possible role of carotenoids in the organization of the photosynthetic apparatus, that is in establishing structural and possibly energetical coupling between the auxiliary pigment phycocyanin and the photosynthetic membrane is suggested.
