Catalytic isomerization of β-epoxides

Abstract

1. β-Epoxides having an alkyl, phenyl, or cyclohexyl group in the α-position undergo transformations in two directions over a Pt-C catalyst in the vapor phase at 250°: isomerization with opening of the ring at the C-O bond adjacent to the substituent, and breakdown into formaldehyde and the corresponding olefin. 2. The aldehydes formed as a result of isomerization under the given conditions are decarbonylated to the corresponding hydrocarbons.
