Catalytic conversions of ethylcyclobutane in the presence of platinum black

Abstract

The main reaction of ethylcyclobutane on platinum black between 300 and 390°C is hydrogenolysis of the C4 ring. In addition, hydrocracking, isomerization, aromatization and the nonhydrogenolytic opening of the ring into olefins occur. The selectivity of ring opening varies as a function of the temperature and the hydrogen content of the carrier gas. The reaction mechanism proposed earlier had to be somewhat modified to interpret the results.
