Catalytic activity of a tungsten carbide electrocatalyst in the reduction of HNO3, HNO2, and NH2OH by molecular hydrogen

Abstract

The overall reduction processes occurring with HNO3, HNO2, NH2OH in the course of catalytic hydrogenation in the presence of tungsten carbide catalyst were studied. It has been shown that under the experimental conditions used (acid media) the species studied can be easily converted into NH4+ ions. The role of different factors influencing the reaction rates (temperature, concentration) was studied. The phenomena observed are discussed on the basis of the assumption that the overall reduction consists of coupled electrochemical reactions.
