Abstract

For optical fields, the direct measurement of the photon statistics of the low-intensity displaced field with available photodetectors is a nontrivial problem. To address the problem, the combination of an unbalanced scheme for realizing the displacement of the signal field and a balanced scheme with a random-phase local oscillator is presented to obtain the photon statistics. Local phase-space sampling may be experimentally accessible for optical fields by a cascaded homodyne scheme, combining the advantages of the unbalanced and balanced schemes. The resulting sampling function is a unique, rescaled zero-order pattern function which is independent of the phase-space amplitude.
