It became evident at the turn of the millennium that even the initial disorder of the carbohydrate metabolism - fasting plasma glucose and/or impaired glucose tolerance - could considerably enhance the incidence of ischaemic cardiovascular diseases. Consequently, the prevention as well as the early diagnosis and treatment of carbohydrate metabolic disorders are important factors of the prevention of cardiovascular diseases. Lifestyle changes - restriction of daily calory intake, regular physical activity, prompt correction of body weight if necessary - as well as early education and spreading of these directives are importent components of the prevention. Regular analysis of postprandial blood glucose level provides the early diagnosis for subjects suffering from multiple risk factors of cardiovascular diseases. Drugs delaying carbohydrate absorption and/or enhancing insulin sensitivity are tools of pharmacotherapy of first choice if non-pharmacological treatment proves to be insufficient.
