Calibration of modelled shallow lake flow using wind field modification

Abstract

The currents in the western part of Lake Balaton (Hungary) were modelled, emphasizing the calibration of the computed flow fields on the basis of field measurements. For flow simulation, a 2D vertically integrated ADI-model was used. Analysis of the measured data showed that using uniform wind stress field the modelled and measured flows were not in good agreement. An improvement was obtained by using non-uniform wind stress field over the lake as model input, estimating in this way the effect of the hilly relief around the lake. First steps were taken in building up a micro-climate wind stress model that computes the wind field over the lake starting from the geostrophic wind.
