Abstract

The authors present BVDV infection of a BVD-free large scale dairy cattle herd, the possibilities of infection, the diagnostic tests used to identify the PI animals and the current control methods. The diagnostic tests were based on antibody and virus detection. In the National Reference Laboratory the used serological method is virus neutralisation test (VNT). The virus can be demonstrated in the laboratory by viral antigen isolation assay (ag-ELISA) and nucleic acid detection (RT-PCR). During this period there were 250 VNT tests, and the whole herd was examined by qRT-PCR. After detection and removal of PI animals, every newborn calves is examined by ag-ELISA quicktest at the farm.
