Buckling of Mirror-Symmetric Plane Structures Under Nonsymmetric Loads

Abstract

This paper deals with the determination of branching critical loads of mirror-symmetric plane structures under non symmetric loading. It is shown that in special cases the critical load can be determined from an algebraic equation of the second degree in simple algebraic terms such as geometric, harmonic, and algebraic averages of critical loads associated with symmetric and antisymmetric buckling shapes of the structure loaded by the symmetric part of the load. The results are applied to analyze discrete and continuous structures, including analysis of the flexural wrinkling of sandwich panels.
