Breeding a wheat variety with different lines for technological quality and HMW glutenin composition

Abstract

A selection technique is recommended for the combination of different technological quality types in a single population by means of a biochemical marker, the HMW glutenin composition. In the experiments lines with different quality traits were selected from a wheat population and two basic types were distinguished. In addition to genotypes with 5+10 HMW glutenin subunits and good rheological traits, selection was also made for genotypes with similar protein and gluten contents characteristic of the old Hungarian variety Bankuti 1201, which has a HMW glutenin composition similar to that designated as 2+12 subunits on chromosome 1D. Among the populations developed from five lines with different compositions, different combinations of good rheological properties and high protein content were found. The suggested selection procedure is also suitable for the development of a certain technological quality using other biochemical or molecular markers.
