Bipolarons localised by Ti dopants in reduced LiNbO3 crystals double-doped by Ti and Mg

The changed incorporation of Ti in LiNbO3 from the Li to the Nb site due to over-threshold Mg codoping leads to a shift of the Ti3+ charge transfer band from ̃ 1.8 eV to ̃1.6 eV. Changes of the Ti Li3+/TiNb3+ concentration ratio observed by EPR upon various annealing and optical bleaching treatments are discussed in terms of bipolarons stabilised by Ti.
