Abstract

Mucus is a complex viscoelasticfluid that lubricates, protects and moisturizes the mucosal surfaces such as the human lungs, gastrointestinal tract, and eyes. It serves as a physical barrier against pathogens and foreign particles front the environment. Rheo- logical characterization of mucus contributes to understand the mucus physiology and pathology and it is also important in the development of drug delivery systems designed for use at mucosal surfaces. The present review provides a short overvierv of the most important findings of mucosa layers and recent strategies in the design of efficient drug delivery systems.
